Castel d’Aviano Golf Club is situated close to Pordenone in the industrial area of Italy. We are surprised to find such a beautiful and welcoming Golf Club in this area. The area itself is pretty ugly, there is a huge United States military base in the village at the bottom of the hill where the course is located. And a lot of other industrial buildings. But when you get closer to the course the road gets smaller and steeper and you’ll cross some small Italian streets and there it is; Villa Policreti and the golf club.
All is pretty well maintained and we get a very warm welcome at the reception of the golf club. We play on the practice putting green (where you hear the noise of an extractor from the restaurant next to the course). But the green is good, just like the driving range. The course is divided in two parts, one part is flat and quite new in our opinion regarding the young trees around the holes. The other part is situated in the woods around the Castel. Hole 13 and 14 are the most pretty ones in our opinion, followed by a very steep road to hole 15. Hole 17 is challenging and really interesting with a water obstacle downhill and a small dogleg to the left.
We had to start on hole 3 because of maintenance and played hole 1 and 2 at the last. Strange that the numbers of the holes aren’t changed, because the way we walked it, it’s the nicest. For some reason we didn´t expect much of this course, but it is a great course to visit and play!
